On Friday, April 26, the Lady Braves and Lady Demons softball teams squared off at Williamstown. In the showdown of district opponents Grant etched out another victory at 6-3.
Before the game, both sides raised money to fight cancer, and the players on both teams were all sporting pink socks.
Grant started on offense while the Lady Demons took to the field with Hailey Webb as pitcher. Although Williamstown initially gave up a walk they responded swiftly as Kristen Kinkelo picked off Payton Gosney at second.
The Lady Braves jumped out to an early lead. Following a double by Alexis Cull, Grant established a 2-0 lead when Brianna Knochelman hit an in-the-park home run.
The Lady Demons’ defense halted Grant’s momentum soon after as they earned two groundouts.
During Williamstown’s turn at bat Knochelman rang up three strikeouts to end the inning in short order.
Moving into the second inning the Lady Demons scored an initial out as Webb earned a kill. Grant retaliated, however, as Jaydyn Corbin, Alexis Barnes, and Jaylie Vance all made contact. The Lady Braves scored an additional run as Corbin took home.
Another strikeout by Webb along with a save by catcher McKayla Lamson brought the top of the inning to a close as the Lady Demons went to bat.
It was then that Grant gave up their first base as Karson Heaverin was walked. Two pass-balls from the Lady Braves then saw Heavrin steal second and third as Williamstown sought to recover ground.
After Kilynn White was walked, Grant’s defense was cracked. While attempting to pick off a runner at second the Lady Braves allowed Heavrin to steal home. White was picked off soon after. Two strikeouts ended the inning.
In the third inning, Knochelman earned a single then Bronwen Sydnor brought replacement runner Myla Rose home to make it 4-1.
The Lady Demons then stopped the assault with a strikeout and two forceouts at first.
Meanwhile, Williamstown had two singles in the third as Webb and Leslie Martin both earned bases. Sadly for the Lady Demons, they couldn’t capitalize before the Lady Braves got their third out.
In the fourth, Grant pulled further away as a pass-ball along with great hitting proved damaging to Williamstown’s defense. Alexis Barnes and Vance both scored runs for the Lady Braves before a double by Addison Workman stopped the bleed. Kinkelo was the only batter to earn a base in the bottom of the inning after being walked.
At 6-1, Grant remained ahead progressing into the fifth inning but was stalled by Williamstown’s defense.
Returning the favor the Lady Braves only allowed a single base as Webb reached first.
For the Lady Braves Hudson was likewise walked while Liza Simpson earned the only base hit.
The top of the sixth saw the Lady Demons continue to contain Grant’s offense with Heavrin, Martin, and White all making catches.
In the bottom on the inning, Workman singled then White hit a triple to centerfield with an error, allowing the Lady Demons to score, making it 6-2.
Williamstown recovered more ground in the seventh. Rallying after two strikeouts, Webb hit a single and was batted in by a triple from Martin.
Simpson earned the Lady Brave’s only base hit in the final inning as the game came to a close. Though the Lady Demons fought to stay alive Grant closed the game ahead 6-3.
